When It Started

The Maharashtra Lek Ladki Scheme was announced in the financial year 2023–24 as part of the Maharashtra State Budget. It was introduced with the objective of strengthening support systems for girl children belonging to economically weaker sections. The announcement was made during the budget presentation in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, where special emphasis was placed on women empowerment and girl child welfare. The scheme came into effect shortly after its official approval by the state cabinet. Following the announcement, government departments were instructed to prepare operational guidelines, eligibility conditions, and application procedures. Implementation began through local administrative bodies such as municipal corporations, zilla parishads, and women and child development offices. The timing of the launch was significant because it was introduced in response to ongoing concerns about gender imbalance, financial insecurity among low-income families, and the need to support girls’ education. The scheme also complements existing initiatives aimed at improving female literacy and reducing early marriage cases.
