Objective
The Maharashtra Lek Ladki Scheme is a flagship welfare initiative launched by the Government of Maharashtra to promote the birth, education, and overall development of girl children from economically weaker families. The primary objective of this scheme is to reduce gender discrimination, encourage families to value girl children, and provide long-term financial support that ensures a secure future for them.
Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to eligible families at different stages of the girl childβs life, starting from birth and continuing until she reaches adulthood. The assistance is structured in installments linked to milestones such as school admission and completion of education. This phased support ensures that the girl child remains in school and is not forced into early marriage due to financial constraints.
The scheme reflects the state governmentβs commitment toward women empowerment and gender equality. By offering monetary benefits and structured savings support, the Maharashtra Lek Ladki Scheme aims to strengthen the social and economic position of girls in Maharashtra. It also aligns with broader national objectives of improving female literacy rates, reducing dropout rates, and promoting inclusive growth.

The Maharashtra Lek Ladki Scheme was announced in the financial year 2023β24 as part of the Maharashtra State Budget. It was introduced with the objective of strengthening support systems for girl children belonging to economically weaker sections. The announcement was made during the budget presentation in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, where special emphasis was placed on women empowerment and girl child welfare. The scheme came into effect shortly after its official approval by the state cabinet. Following the announcement, government departments were instructed to prepare operational guidelines, eligibility conditions, and application procedures. Implementation began through local administrative bodies such as municipal corporations, zilla parishads, and women and child development offices. The timing of the launch was significant because it was introduced in response to ongoing concerns about gender imbalance, financial insecurity among low-income families, and the need to support girlsβ education. The scheme also complements existing initiatives aimed at improving female literacy and reducing early marriage cases. Since its launch, awareness campaigns have been conducted at district and village levels to inform eligible families about the benefits and application process. The scheme continues to be operational and forms an important part of Maharashtraβs social welfare policies.Government of India
